Staying true to her signature style, i deserve nice things finds SCAPA foraying into experimental pastures while retaining a strong club-oriented component, culminating in one-of-a-kind innovations. Introducing itself with spiralling synth arpeggios, ebbing motifs and glitched-out percussion, the EP’s 140BPM title track “i deserve nice things” builds to heady crescendos, taking audible cues from a mishmash of disparate genres including techno, grime and ambient music.
“i can do anything i want”, again taking its name from a feel-good affirmation, is an unexpectedly eerie affair. Recalling early Pokémon soundtracks, it finds detuned leads and chirping 8-bit melodies interlaced with a grid of rattling, intricately programmed percussion, genreless but fine-tuned for the dance. Decorated with sombre chords and flourishes of atmospherics, the song is in constant metamorphosis, winding up in a drastically different place to where it started. Meanwhile, spotlighting yet another style in her skillset, “i talk to myself and it’s jokes” opts for a more conventional four-to-the-floor rhythm, weaving subtle funk influences into an otherwise out-and-out hypnotic techno belter. As can be expected from SCAPA, however, it offers surprises around every corner...
